SWIM LESSON LEVEL INFORMATION

There is something for everyone in the Neptune Aquatic Center course offerings. Multi-levels of instruction are designed to help swimmers of all ages develop and refine their skills. The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors teach a variety of strokes including front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly. Infants - adults are invited to join us in programs that provide students with a fun and exciting learning environment. All classes are designed to help students learn to swim and learn water safety skills that will improve their swimming knowledge with new strokes, stroke refinements, diving safety tips and more. Instruction in swimming is complimented by games and drills to provide a positive experience in the water.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

Group Swim Lessons: Under the instruction of an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, students and adults will learn a variety of strokes in a small group setting defined by the needs of the group. All classes are designed to help students learn to swim or improve their current skills with new strokes, stroke refinement, diving safety tips and techniques as well as much, much more. The courses will run one time per week for either 30 or 45 minutes for five weeks.

Parent & Me Lessons: Students must be between the ages of 6 months and 3 years old to enter this class. The classes are designed to build basic water safety skills for both parents and children, helping infants and young children become comfortable in the water so they are willing and ready to learn to swim. Parents will be expected to get into the water
each time with their students. This class will run for 30 minutes once per week with a ratio of 5 student pairs to 1 instructor.

Pre-School Lessons: Students must be between the ages of 3 and 5 to enter this class. Students will become comfortable with the water and will practice and be evaluated on: entering and exiting the water safely, submerge mouth, nose and eyes, exhale underwater, open eyes underwater, pick up a submerged object, float on front and back, explore arm
movements, swim on front and back and basic water safety skills. This class will run for 30 minutes once per week with a ratio of 4 students to 1 instructor.

Beginner Swim Lessons: (ARC Levels 1-2-3) Students must be at least 6 years old to enter this course. Students will learn to safely enter water, blow bubbles, learn to float on back and front, begin alternate arm movements for front and back crawl, tread in deep water, and begin forward motion in a front and back glide. This class will run for 45 minutes once per week with a ratio of 6 students to 1 instructor. As the progress into level three, they will begin working on front crawl and elementary back stroke.

Intermediate Swim Lessons: (ARC Levels 3-4-5) Before entering this class, students should understand and be able to effectively demonstrate ALL fundamentals from Beginner levels 1 and 2. Intermediate swimmers will work on alternate breath and arm action, front and back crawl, breaststroke, swim under water, open turns in front and back crawl, and basic diving safety. This class will run for 45 minutes once per week with a ratio of 7 students to 1 instructor.

Pre-Comp Swim Team: (ONLY OFFERED: FALL AND SPRING) Students who sign up for this class should have completed, at a minimum, level 4 of the ARC classes. They should expect to be swimming upwards of 300 yards per class. The class will focus on developing the four competitive strokes as well as starts and turns. The coaching staff will work with each swimmer to teach them how to swim faster and prepare to compete more successfully. As a prerequisite for the class, swimmers should be able to swim 2 lengths of the pool in free-style and backstroke. Please call if you have any questions regarding the class before signing up. This class will run for 45 minutes twice per week with a ratio of 8 students to 1 coach.

NEW! Young Adult Beginner & Intermediate Classes: (ARC Levels 1-5) These classes are designed for young teens and high school students who want to improve their swimming skills. This age group of students is often reluctant to sign up for swim classes because they are afraid to be placed in a class with the "little kids." Our small class size and extended class schedules, allow us to group young adults primarily by age where they are allowed to progress individually and at a faster pace than younger swimmers. Young adult swimmers will learn Freestyle before moving on to the more advanced swim strokes.

Adult Beginner & Intermediate Classes: The Beginner and Intermediate courses are for individuals with little or no experience in the water. Students will learn breath control, floats (front/back), basic water safety skills, treading water and introduction to the basic strokes (freestyle/backstroke). Students in the more intermediate class will learn breaststroke and continue stroke development in freestyle and backstroke. Both classes take place at the same time with multiple instructors.

Pre-Comp Swim team workouts: Program is an introduction to competitive swimming for kids who are interested in developing their endurance and technique to join a competitive team.  Swimmers in this program will learn the basics of being part of a swim team; dives, turns, reading the pace clock, circle swimming, and understanding workouts and sets.  Swimmers will learn legal butterfly and should have an understanding of freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke coming into the program.
